Sexually confused

Dear Labi Amore,

I'm seventeen, and a red-head. I lost my virginity last September, but I was never comfortable enough in bed to enjoy it. First off, I was self-conscious about my pubic hair...I've had numerous people ask me if it is red, and when I answered yes I always got a surprised and humored reaction. I was so embarrassed that I eagerly shaved it, and then I noticed that my labia were large, which made me REALLY self-conscious. My boyfriend would love to go down on me, but I was so worried that I couldn't really pay attention to the way it felt. I thought something was wrong, especially because it hurt a lot when we had sex or when he fingered me. My eyes even watered. Is that normal? After reading some of these letters, I get the sense that it isn't. My self-esteem is pretty low even though I've been asked out numerous times and such. I'm even too scared to see a gynecologist because I'm afraid of what he'll say in reaction to seeing my vagina. Thank you SO much for being supportive on this web site. I'm really relieved when reading these letters...I can't tell you how much better I feel after looking on this site.

Your gynocologist will say nothing, because you are perfectly normal! There is nothing abnormal about having labia that are large. You should not be having pain during sex, either, so be good to yourself and get yourself to the gyno. There are a few conditions (like vulvodynia) that can cause pain during sex. Find out what is going on; you shouldn't have to live with pain.

As for the red pubic hair, I think that sounds sexy! Better than the brown pubic hair that me and most of the population has!
